Choosing a business name is another important decision to make when creating a new business. Most people think about the product or service they will be providing, but it’s important to consider legal aspects of choosing a business name.

An important distinction to understand is the difference between the legal name of your business and the name you will use when conducting business.

Certificate of Good Standing
What is a CGS?

A Certificate of Good Standing is a certificate issued by the Kansas Secretary of State’s Office certifying that a business has complied with the applicable provisions of the laws of the state of Kansas, is in good standing, and authorized to transact business or to conduct affairs within this state.

To obtain a Certificate of Good Standing (CGS), first perform a business entity search on the company for which you need these documents.

When you view the search results you will see a button to order a CGS. The CGS can be ordered online by using this button. If you order online, you may pay the fee at the time of your order using a credit card, checking account, or Kansas.gov subscriber account. If you order online, you must provide an email address to receive an order confirmation from our office and you must print the certificate on your own printer.

If instead you would like to order the CGS by phone or mail, you may call us at (785) 296-4564 and provide payment with credit card or mail us your request to the address below, with a check. This option, the paper request, (ordering by phone or mail) has a higher fee than the online request.

To verify the validity of a CGS:

If you have a CGS that you need to verify, click here. You will be asked to provide the verification code at the bottom of the certificate.

Obtain Copies of Filed Documents

For certified copies of filed documents, please use the Copy Order Request Form or call our office at 785-296-4564.

For non-certified copies of filed business documents, start by performing a business entity search on the company for which you need copies. When viewing the record, click the “View History & Documents” button on the right of the screen. This is a pdf file, so you may need to “allow” your computer to open the window if you use a pop-up blocker.
